Huitzilopochtli and Aphrodite. Some of the greatest art has come from love and conflict. The combustible combination of passionate personalities in our marriage has led to loads of both. I thought I’d share with you a sampling of the art that our relationship has brought about, both the happy stuff and the tough stuff. I hope you enjoy it!

We Dance

by Matthew Miller, 2001-02-21

The moonlit dance begins, and you and I,
We drift and twirl, our blending spirits bound
And bound and bound the freckled sky.
The only sound, your train upon the ground.

Entwine me, love, as two becoming one,
And cleave that never cloven we should be.
Anon, my love, this waltz has just begun;
Our boundless bond shall never broken be.

So dance! Let all restraint be cast away!
And dance, the moon and shadows chasing nigh!
The movement ends – I lift your hand, and stay,
Transfixèd by your gaze, as fixed as I…

Our love, no words could ever quite command;
As silence speaks, I kneel, and kiss your hand.

My Suitor

by Becky Castle, 2001-09-26

Gold-and-green eyes softly glimmer and grin,
Teasingly hiding a secret untold.
Trying to bless me while guarding my heart;
Watching our God-written story unfold.

Strength in your hands used for lifting my load:
Burdens which bury my joy and my smile.
Folded for praying or strumming for songs,
Hands full of patience when long is the mile.

Easily springs to your mouth – lights your face –
Grin that conveys how much fun hides behind.
Beam which reminds me to smile and breathe;
Grin that can speak like I’m reading your mind.

Voice as familiar as hearing my own.
Voice can be tender when needed, or strong.
Voice which encourages, preaches and prays,
Voice with vibrato when singing me songs.

Feet running faster and urging me on,
Feet to escort me – I don’t walk alone.
Throwing in dance steps and making me laugh,
Beautiful feet carry Gospel unknown.

Gold-and-green eyes softly glimmer and grin,
Teasingly hiding a secret untold.
Trying to bless me while guarding my heart;
Watching our God-written story unfold.

Valentine

by Matthew Miller, 2007-02-14

[verse 1]

You and me, we go together like equality
Goes together with fraternity
And liberty, I quite agree,
Is found in keeping to you.

[verse 2]

You and me, we are battered by imagined woes
And a multitude of friendly foes
But unity, I quite agree,
Is taking them all as one.

[solo]

[verse 3]

You and me, we are gathered in the grip of grace
Seeing mercy on the Father’s face
And empathy, I quite agree,
Is treating each other the same
Is found in keeping to you
Is taking them all on as one

Listen to the song here

Seasons

by Matthew Miller, 2010-08-30

[verse 1]

It was only yesterday
You glanced outside as if to say
Water falling in this way
Steals the joy of winter days

Now, there’s closure if you’d be
Fully unified with me
Mountains spring into the sea
Is no more likely

[chorus]

Then I see all hope is lost in the darkness
And I feel my strength is gone, gone away…

[verse 2]

It was a midnight summer’s dream:
Strife, released as raging steam,
Cools, condensing to a stream
And washes over me

With your back against the wall,
The weary weight of waterfall
Though you stand beneath it all,
I can see you crumbling

[chorus]

Then I see all hope is lost in the darkness
And I feel my strength is gone, gone away…

[pre-bridge]

You’re the only one I know
And I have nowhere to go
If I don’t find my way back home

[bridge]

Though I wander through the valley
Gasping every breath
No, I will fear no evil for
You’ve captured me from death

Though I wandered through this world alone
I did not understand
You’re I Am and you hold my hand…

[outro]

You’re the only one I know
And I have nowhere to go
If I don’t find my way back home
